As I wrap up my final Fall semester in Berkeley, I can’t help but feel reflective over my time spent here. When I think back to that eighteen year old girl whose parents dropped her off at the Unit 3 dorms, that feels like nearly a lifetime ago. I’m so appreciative for all that Berkeley has to offer, and for all that I have experienced while here. In no particular order, some of my favorite experiences have included:
Being a Campus Ambassador
This has been a hugely important part of my time at Cal, and I feel so grateful to have had this job. It has truly built up my confidence and improved upon my people skills like no other experience in my life has. Giving tours is my favorite part of the job, but I also enjoy shifts at the Campanile and visitor center with my wonderful coworkers. The community fostered here has been one of the most welcoming I’ve found at Cal and is why I love my job so much. I feel so fortunate to have had a job throughout my college career that is both impactful and fun. It’s been through my experiences in this role that I’ve realized how much I enjoy working collaboratively and even enjoying teaching and educating others, which is something I hope to pursue in the future.
Being a Part of the Earth & Planetary Science Department
I owe my deepest gratitude to my department’s fantastic faculty, staff, and students with whom I feel a place of belonging here at Berkeley. It is through my department that I have met some of the most passionate, driven, and intelligent people I know. I’m constantly inspired by my instructors and peers, and their encouragement and kindness has been incredibly meaningful to me. I’ve gotten to learn in the classroom, lab, and field, and I am so appreciative that my area of study has strengthened my connection to the natural world.
Being Involved in Student Organizations
Finding like-minded individuals is crucial, and I cannot understate the importance of joining student organizations to have fun and build your community in college. I have been a part of Ocean Society and Geological Association at Berkeley during my time here, and it is through each of these organizations that I have found close friends and become more integrated with the community. I enjoy these organizations for their semesterly camping trips and other events like weekend tidepooling or hikes. My sophomore year camping trip to Yosemite with the Geological Association is still one of my fondest memories of my entire Berkeley career. I currently serve as the club’s Game Chair, and it is so rewarding to create fun activities and foster a welcoming environment for my fellow students!
Being True to Myself
This one may sound funny, but it’s important to recognize the strength of having your own well-developed system of values. From the first year of college to your last, you’ll have matured in many different ways. You’ll have been influenced by your instructors, peers, bosses, coworkers, family, and acquaintances. Upon graduating, you’re expected to know and have gained a lot more than what is simply taught in the classroom. When in college, you’ll learn how to think, but it’s critical that you decide for yourself what you think. I’m grateful for the education I’ve received here at Berkeley that has consistently encouraged me to think critically and decide for myself.
