Free Guided Walking Tours

Reopening with In-Person Campus Walking Tours

Our campus is now open to visitors! Here is some guidance on our return to campus. We are excited to announce that we are now offering in-person campus walking tours; please see below for the link to register. Registration is required and the total tour group size will be strictly limited to 20 visitors. Absolutely no walk-ups will be allowed. We are unable to offer private family tours or school group tours at this time.

Don’t Forget Your Mask!

All visitors will be required to wear masks while inside the Koret Visitor Center. Masks are not required during the outside walking tour. More information from the City of Berkeley.

Free guided walking tours for individuals and families

We offer free 90-minute walking tours of the campus seven days a week, rain or shine. Applying to Berkeley? Tourist? Nostalgic alum? A campus tour is perfect for you! Our expert tour guides are student ambassadors who cover academics, history of the University, health & safety, athletics, student life, and much more. The tour outlines our residence halls and dining options, but does not include viewing a residence hall. Please visit the Cal Housing website for information.

These walking tours are for individuals, families, and parties of up to 5 people. If you are a school group, organization, a bigger group, any size group requesting a Spanish or Mandarin language tour, or you’re interested in a private walking tour or golf cart tour for a fee, please visit the Special Group, Private and Cart Tours Page for more information. We are unsure if we will be able to offer these group/private tours in Fall 2021. We cannot accommodate groups on our free guided walking tour and any groups registering under different names in parties of 5 will be turned away.

Tours start at the Koret Visitor Center at 2227 Piedmont Avenue in the historic California Memorial Stadium, except on home football game weekends when the tours on both Saturday and Sunday will start at the Campanile, the tall clock tower in the middle of campus. Tours end near Sproul Plaza, an approximately 10 minute walk from the Visitor Center.

No campus tours on these dates

Campus tours are offered year-round, 7 days a week, and on most major holidays with the following exceptions:

  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Winter Break (Saturday, December 18, 2021 through Tuesday, January 4, 2022)

The online calendar includes several kinds of tours. Please review the name of the tour before reserving to ensure you are reserving the correct tour. In pre-pandemic times, our calendar opens up about 3 months in advance.

Reservations

We are booking tours through December 2021. If the date you want isn’t available, please continually check the calendar because if someone cancels, those spots will immediately become available for booking. We also may be able to add more tours. Unfortunately, we are unable to offer a waitlist.

Friday, October 1 through Sunday, October 3 is Homecoming! All campus walking tours given during this time are free to Homecoming guests who have minimally purchased the “Class Pass” to attend tours and lectures throughout the weekend. If you are already registered for Homecoming, you are all set! If you haven’t yet registered, please stop by Homecoming Headquarters when on campus to purchase your pass. Tour times and locations are on the Homecoming website.
