An Epicure’s Guide to Berkeley
There is nothing that I love more than enjoying a savory meal, drink or pastry, so here is my guide to where you MUST check out when you visit UC Berkeley.
1951 Coffee Company, a semi hidden coffee shop located on Channing serves one of the most delicious Iced Honey Lavender Lattes. I like to add extra honey and chocolate foam to my order and this drink is honestly one of the many things that I look forward to having whenever I’m in Berkeley. It is quite important to also add that not only does this coffee shop serve delicious beverages, but it also has an admirable mission of supporting the refugee community by providing training and job opportunities for them, all while educating the surrounding community about refugee life and issues.
Tap In Lounge, a deceiving bar with a hidden room in the back serves some of the most delightful cocktails and food. As they mention on their website, do not let the stereotype of bar food keep you away from this hidden gem and their tasty creations. It is worth it to also add that the ambiance of the bar and the service has always been immaculate. When you visit, ask them if they can show you the back room and that is something that I will leave for you to discover on your own.
Fournée Bakery, a French bakery known for their mouthwatering croissants always has a long line of people waiting for them to open. One of my dear friends introduced this place to me after a successful day of playing tennis together and it has become one of favorite spots to grab chocolate croissants.
Poke Parlor, a quick to go spot when you are craving fresh seafood right by campus. They have different varieties of seafood bowls that are customizable and sushi burritos. I’m extremely picky with the seafood that I eat and throughout the last year and half that I’ve been ordering from them, they have always maintained their quality.
Delah Coffee House, a café located on the northside of campus, with its warm ambiance. This café has many popular items that include their milk cakes and Yemeni Latte. My personal favorites are the Saffron Milk cake, Iced Yemeni Latte and lastly for when I crave a refreshing drink during the hot days, their Mangoarabian. It is important to add that they are also a great place for studying.
Baker & Commons, located a few blocks away from campus, offers great breakfast and brunch options. Perfect for your weekend mornings, you can order their specialty sandwiches. One of my favorites being the curried chicken sandwich with iced mocha to go along with it. This café is in a great spot surrounded by shops, so after finishing your brunch you can go on a nice stroll.
Noodle Dynasty, a small hole in the wall located on Telegraph offers one of the best noodle soups in town. This is my go-to stop when I crave a warm and flavorful meal during the rainy season. My personal favorite is their house special lamb rack, and most times it provides me with two meals given the big portion.
This city is filled with many hidden gems that are worth exploring and trying. These were some of my top favorites in Berkeley, and I hope that you find this short guide useful.
