Food Recipes for Dorm-Living

Food Recipes for Dorm-Living

For my freshman year at Berkeley, I lived in Blackwell Hall. I absolutely loved my experience and got to meet so many new people from around the world; I know that I’m going to miss living so close to so many close friends. It really was like a fun sleepover every night (except we had to go to classes, do homework, write exams…the parts that made it a little more stressful than a sleepover). However, while Blackwell is the newest undergraduate dorm building with many nice amenities like a 24-hour gym and 3 study/social lounges on each floor...

Building Community: A Year in the House on Warring Street

Building Community: A Year in the House on Warring Street

During my senior year of college I lived in a house with nine other women, and believe me when I tell you: it was better than the movies.

This was a reality my freshman-self could never have predicted, especially having started college on Zoom amidst the COVID pandemic. I went from having no in-person college community to coming home to one every day. The added excitement to this senior year housing extravaganza was that I only knew 4 of the 9 women before moving in. Most of us didn’t know each other at...

Fifteen Years in the Making: A Letter to my Past Selves About Study Abroad

Fifteen Years in the Making: A Letter to my Past Selves About Study Abroad

Let me start by addressing my past selves, beginning with five-year-old me. Remember how you went to LEGOLand and went through the mini LEGO cities? You saw the Sydney Opera House and instantly thought Wow, I need to go there! You learned that the magnificent structure in front of you was real and located in a place called Sydney, Australia. From that point on, you knew you needed to go to Sydney and see Australia for yourself. Australia became a place of wonder and utter coolness. Moving on a few...

Day in the Life of an English Major

November 17, 2023

All throughout high school (...and middle school) I would watch countless amounts of “Day in the Life of a…” videos. Heading into my college years, I especially loved to see videos about college students and people who were studying what I wanted to study. Rather than film a video, I’m going to be sharing my day in the life as a Berkeley English major!

From a recent Friday (08/27/23) in the Fall 2023 Semester:

8:30-9:00 am – Waking up! Honestly, sometimes the hardest part of my day. But it is Friday!

9:30 am – Grabbing a...

Blogging

April 26, 2024

Hello. My name is Maggie, and I have been running Bear Talk Blog for the past two years.

I got introduced to blogging in the 4th grade. My ELA teacher, Mrs. Mueller, ran her own blog and taught us the purpose and styles of blogging. In the 5th grade, Mrs. Mueller has us start our own blogs on Kid Blog, making required posts once a week. For the month of March, our entire class had the option of participating in the Slice of Life challenge. This was a daily blogging challenge started by the Two Writing Teachers blog,...

Changing with the Season(ing)s

April 3, 2024

I never learned how to cook on my own until this year, my sophomore year of college. Before, it was always my parents guiding me through the steps – let the pan heat up before adding the oil, add meat before vegetables, understand when it’s fully cooked. The base seasonings I use in my apartment are the same ones: onion powder, garlic powder, paprika. But as I’ve made food at Berkeley, I’ve found myself adjusting the flavors slightly, adding my own dash of perspective.

I think growing up is a lot like cooking. If you're cooking raw meat, the first seasoning gets...

Living On My Own & The Reality Of It

March 20, 2024

Unlike most college students, I didn’t move out at seventeen. No, instead I moved out at nineteen, when I transferred to Berkeley to finish my college career as an upperclassmen.

After realizing that I was going to be moving to Berkeley from Southern California and living on my own, hundreds of miles away from my family, I was excited but also scared.

There are so many positives when it comes to living on your own and the expectations that I had were most definitely met.

The first thing was making my own schedule without...

Coping with Newfound Adulthood

March 15, 2024

Like most fairytale-loving kids, I never wanted to grow up. The idea that growing up meant becoming a responsible, reliable, and problem-solving person out of necessity was sickening. When you’re a child it’s whimsical to do responsible things on impulse, because you can go play after. Nowadays, at 20, to play is to be rewarded, and by what? Finishing tasks? Meeting deadlines? Having such little anxiety or imposter syndrome or so much stress and fatigue that you finally just stop studying? The feeling of never doing enough follows me around like a bouncy child asking “Are we there...

Hiking to Independence

March 13, 2024

“How many times does your mom call you?” is a question that I was once asked at the end of my sophomore year. It took me a second to think, and I replied with, “Maybe twice.”

“Now, is this twice a week? Twice a day?”

“No, twice the entire time I have been at Berkeley.”

People are usually shocked when I tell them my mom rarely calls me, but we still do talk. We keep our Snapchat streak going, and I will send her some pictures of the sights I see, food I eat, or quickly tell her something funny that just happened. We will...

Course Highlight: L&S 12, The Berkeley Changemaker

April 18, 2021

As a campus ambassador, some of the most common questions I get on my tours are: what are some of the best classes to take? And, this one is a big one, but why Berkeley? What makes our university different from the rest?

The answer to these questions lies in L&S 12: The Berkeley Changemaker, a 2 unit course that students can take on a pass/no pass basis.
